Be ready when a customer asks how you buy

A customer or a tender has asked your business for something new. It might be a Carbon Reduction Plan, a supplier questionnaire or a scored section on social value. I help you find out where you stand and build the evidence once, so you can reuse it for every request that follows. It starts with a free ten-minute health check.

Who is asking, and why

Public buyers. Central government asks for a Carbon Reduction Plan from suppliers bidding for contracts above £5 million a year, and gives social value at least 10% of the tender score. The NHS has applied Carbon Reduction Plan requirements to all new procurements since April 2024.

Large customers. Big businesses with net zero targets need emissions data from the firms they buy from. Their supplier questionnaires now cover carbon, labour standards and policies.

Your competitors. When two suppliers look alike on price and quality, the one that can evidence its position picks up marks the other cannot.

Requests pass down the supply chain. Your customer is asked by its own customer, and the question reaches you with a deadline attached.

The five areas buyers look at

Buyers' questions fall into five areas. The health check scores you on each one.

1

Governance and policy

A written policy approved at the top, a named owner, and buyers who know what is expected of them.

2

Environment and carbon

A measured carbon footprint with an estimate for your supply chain, and a plan with targets to reduce it.

3

Labour and human rights

Fair pay, safe work and modern slavery risk, checked where the risk sits in what you buy.

4

Supply chain management

Knowing who you buy from, where the money goes and which suppliers are critical or high risk.

5

Social value

Apprenticeships, local employment and community support, recorded so a buyer can score it.

How I can help

The work goes at your pace. Each part is useful on its own, and you decide how far to go.

I review how you buy today against what your customers and tenders ask for, starting from your health check result.

See where you stand

1

I put numbers on your position: a carbon footprint that includes your supply chain, and a map of your suppliers by spend and risk. The same review often shows where costs can come down.

Measure the starting point

2

I help you put the missing pieces in place in priority order, such as the policy, the supplier checks and the social value record. Your team learns how to keep them current.

Close the gaps

3

Before a questionnaire or tender goes in, I check your evidence against what the buyer has asked for. A yearly review keeps it up to date.

An evidence pack you build once

There is no single certificate for this. Buyers accept a set of short, current documents that together answer most questionnaires.

The pack is a sustainable procurement policy, a carbon footprint, a carbon reduction plan, a modern slavery statement, a supplier list with priorities and a social value record.

Keep each document short, current and accurate. A claim you cannot evidence costs marks.

Why it can pay for itself

Mapping your suppliers for a customer also shows where your own money goes: overlapping suppliers, spend that nobody manages and contracts left to roll over. Energy and waste work lowers both emissions and bills.

That is why I start with your spend. The savings can fund the sustainability work. Net Zero need not cost the Earth.
